Tenerife is a Spanish island, the largest of the seven Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known as the island of eternal spring, thanks to its constant weather, which is appreciated by tourists as much as the huge national park in the interior of the island. This is dominated by the Pico del Teide, which is even the highest mountain in the whole of Spain. There are a total of 140 beaches on the island that attract swimming and relaxation, as well as a range of accommodation.
CULTURE
Tenerife has a fascinating history and culture and offers its visitors many historical and cultural sites. A classic representative of the typical Canarian spirit is the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In addition to the many important monuments that illustrate the local culture, don't miss a visit to the city's attraction, the Museo de la Historia de Tenerife, where you can learn, among other things, why local music has such a distinctive Latin rhythm. At the Museum of Nature and Man, in addition to the natural history and architectural collections, you'll also find an exhibition on the culture and way of life of the Guanches, the original Berber inhabitants of the Canary Islands.
KITCHENS
In Canarian, and therefore Tenerife, cuisine, olive oil, garlic and a variety of spices and herbs are used in the preparation of dishes. Fish, poultry, rabbit meat, potatoes and various vegetables are served. A speciality is vieja fish, similar in taste to carp, which is also sold dried and salted in the markets. Popular is sancocho, a dried fish cooked with potatoes, onions and garlic. Various types of herring are often served. A delicacy typical of Canarian ancient cuisine is papas arrugadas, small potato chips cooked in heavily salted water until the water evaporates. A popular local drink is sangría, which is based on red wine to which various stronger alcoholic drinks are added. A true Tenerife sangría can be recognised by the fact that it always contains, among other things, banana liqueur and sliced banana. Desserts are very popular here. You should try bienmesabe (whipped almond cream with egg yolks and honey), flan (caramel cream), franbollo (porridge made of cornflour and milk) and, of course, ice cream. A speciality of Tenerife is flambéed bananas.
FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Tenerife people like to celebrate very often. The most common festivities are the so-called romerías in honour of local patrons. These are not purely religious celebrations, you will also encounter elements of folk festivities. You'll see colourful processions with allegorical floats, with folklore, music and costumes playing a major role. Many of the festivities have no fixed dates, so it's a good idea to find out about them in advance. Tenerife's most famous and largest festival is Carnival, which takes place in February and is one of the biggest in the world after the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. A tourist attraction is the Fiestas de Mayo, which is an old religious tradition and includes the largest pyrotechnic celebrations in the archipelago. The festival is held annually in Los Realejos, in the north of Tenerife. Don't miss the Tenerife Walking Festival, which includes hikes around the island and additional activities.
CLIMATE AND ACTIVITIES
Teneriffe is not nicknamed "the island of eternal spring" for nothing. It has a subtropical climate and pleasant temperatures all year round. The island is divided into two climatic zones, the north has a cooler climate and is greener thanks to the abundant rainfall. The south, on the other hand, is sunny and dry. The ocean temperature is stable throughout the year. In the summer, you can enjoy around 11 hours of sunshine a day and temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees Celsius, while in the winter the temperatures drop slightly to between 16 and 22 degrees. The refreshing breeze allows for pleasant relaxation all year round. The favourable climate provides opportunities for a wide variety of activities. If you get tired of swimming and sunbathing, you can try diving, surfing, fishing, cycling, paragliding or trekking. Golf lovers will love it here, Teneriffe has the most golf courses of any of the Canary Islands.
WHAT NOT TO SKIP
As well as Spain's highest peak , the Pico del Teide, which reaches 3,718 metres, there are the stunning Anaga massif, the majestic Los Gigantes cliffs on the west coast, the vineyards of the Orotava and Güímar valleys and much more. Surrounding Pico del Teide is Mount Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can observe many species of plants.
