2019 Revolution.
Revising the past. Reformation of a cowardly consensus. A revolution of the everyday and of fearful timidity. On the threshold of the thirtieth anniversary of the Czech Velvet Revolution, we take stock. We are commemorating an undeniably significant social and cultural event that took place in our country. Some lived through it themselves, others grew up in the period immediately following the revolution. Signal Festival 2019 turns to the past, thematizing the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Velvet Revolution, and the end of the Iron Curtain. But it also looks to the future. It seeks answers to the question of whether we are even ready for the next revolution, now and here. We follow the protests, storms and riots. But are we ourselves capable of stepping out of the shadows of our own comfort, security, the temperature of our homes and the fast internet, and once again setting out to fight for a better world? We stand on the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution. Artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology, autonomous cars and 3D printing are transforming the world around us with every passing minute. But we see revolution as change in a broad sense. A refinement, a radical transformation on a large and the smallest personal scale. A change in society as much as a revolution in scientific inventions and methodologies. As a value restructuring and redesign of an environment that needs and can improve. The visual arts are also transforming. Creative and cultural industries are claiming the floor, visual and digital arts are transforming seamlessly into AI and principles working with augmented reality. Conceptual kinetic art has synergized with state-of-the-art technologies. Signal Festival has also undergone a revolution since its inception. It has grown from a showcase of video mapping and light design into a respected digital art festival and art/tech cultural event that is now one of the largest in the country. New venues. New locations. New practices. New collaborations. New possibilities. Change is the creative principle of the festival. Evolution, revolution, trying to look around the corner and see new possibilities, solutions, challenges. Revolution is not just here and now. Revolution is forever.
