Jezd

Jezd

is the highest mountain in the Ještěd-Kozákov ridge. With an altitude of 1,012 meters above sea level, it is considered one of the landmarks of northern Bohemia. The hotel, restaurant, and television transmitter at the top of Ještěd is a remarkable structure in the shape of a rotational hyperboloid, which is one of the symbols of the Liberec Region. The building was constructed in the 1960s and designed by architect Karel Hubáček, who won the prestigious Perret Prize from the International Union of Architects for his work. On September 29, 2005, the building was designated a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic by a government resolution (effective January 1, 2006), which should increase its chances of being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The shape of the building – a hyperboloid – was chosen because of the weather conditions prevailing at the summit. Thanks to this shape, the hotel blends in perfectly with the slopes of the mountain and visually completes it.
